A word from the Principal: 20 June

Research has shown that regular attendance at school is linked to positive educational outcomes for students. The table below indicates how students who regularly miss one day a week of school for a whole year actually end up having missed two years of schooling.

I have been impressed with the attendance of our students this year. Apart from families going on holidays we have only had 2 students whose attendance has been below 80%. There are however a few students who arrive at school late on a regular basis.

Even though it is better to arrive late than not attend at all, the start to the school day is important. Students need to be at school no later than 8.40 so that they can unpack their belongings and get their desks prepared for the day. Arriving AFTER the siren sets a tardy example for the rest of the day. As a parent it is important that you use clear messages about attendance and arriving on time.

For example:

“It’s time to get up and get ready for school.”

“Be dressed in five minutes and you can have extra time on the iPad after school.”

“We will be leaving in five minutes.”

Earlier this term the school carried out a survey to determine the viability of having before and after school care on the site. We had approximately 30 out of a possible 133 families respond to survey. Of the 30 responses most of them were quite positive. After much deliberation it was determined that the school does not have suitable facilities to cater for this service at this time. However it is something that we will consider in the future if an suitable area in the school becomes available.

I would like to thank my teachers for their diligence in writing your children’s’ reports. These will be sent home with your child on Thursday 28 June. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my staff for their hard work and dedication to their jobs this term. They have ALL provided your students with an array of educational experiences. I will be on long service leave for the last 3 days of this term. Mr Stratton will be acting Principal during this time. To the entire school community have a wonderful and safe holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 16 July.
