Message from the School Board Chair
Thank you to all the members of the school Board including Lyn Dawson, Chris Stratton, Lesley Riches, Liz Macey, Dawn McDonald, Phil Green, Adam Grzelec, Simmone Pogorzelski, Jodie McIntosh, Tabetha McCallum, and Jacinta Baker. Without your participation, input and concern and love for the students of East Hamersley Primary, our school wouldn’t be the wonderful learning centre it is today.
This year, the School Board met each term to discuss the direction the school is heading, the results our students are achieving and what we need to change or put into practice to ensure good governance.
Once we reviewed the School Board Guidelines, all Board Members participated in online Board Members Training Modules put out by the Education Department to ensure we are following best practice and ticking all the boxes required for a School Board to run successfully. Lyn and I also attended a one day training session at the Department this month just to make sure we were on track as a Board.
Staff Members Liz Macey and Judi Waters over the past year have reported to the Board what has occurred with the day to day teaching and learning of our students and the progress that has been made. This report is always heavily scrutinised by the Board with many questions asked and answered to ensure we are addressing the targets aligned with our School Business Plan 2018 -2020.
Board Member Simmone Pogorzelski who is also a sessional academic at ECU has been working with the School to trial an effective program for a systematic approach to the Teaching of English in Pre Primary and Year 1. We all recognise that if we can teach them these skills earlier the benefits in the long term are outstanding.
The 2018 NAPLAN results were outstanding and an affirmation that our awesome hard working Teaching Staff are getting the message and lesson structures right for our students. Phil Green a Board Member who works in the School Performance Branch of the Education Department reported that our results were in the top 15% of Public Schools in WA and that the Year 3 and Year 5 students outperformed all like schools in all tasks. A true validation of the programs the school has put in place for our kids. Your School Board also validated the 2017 Annual Report that was put together and are pleased to report that most targets were met.
The Fathering Project led by Adam Grzelec meets each term to get Dads and their children spending more time together. Various activities are organised for the Dad’s alone as well as activities with their children. I encourage you to come along and join in when you can.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Staff, Students and the Community of East Hamersley Primary School a very Merry Christmas and a very safe New Year.
Eli Greatley – Chairperson EHPS School Board
