East Hamersley Primary School has a clear evidence based instructional approach aligned to High Impact Teaching, catering for the needs of all students.
While we don’t specifically align to one scholarly approach, we have instead borrowed elements from different academics, research and evidence, to create ‘the East Hamersley PS approach’ to high quality teaching. The following four principles guide our teaching, every day, and have been adapted from Barak Rosenshine, Dylan Wiliam, Dr Lorraine Hammond and Teach Well.
- Full Participation – students who participate frequently in lessons, learn more
- Daily Review – regular review of previously taught content helps information to be stored in long term memory
- Small Manageable Chunks – content is delivered in small manageable chunks with a high amount of guidance and practice
- Check for Understanding – Teachers regularly check student understanding to identify and inform the next steps in the teaching and learning sequence
Catering for every student
While we have a strong focus on English and Maths in the school, we ensure we follow Department of Education guidelines and meet the expectations of the WA Curriculum. In addition to our strong academic program, we cater for the needs of all students through incursions and excursions, hold whole school special learning days such as NAIDOC or Multicultural Day, hold spectacular Book Week celebrations and whole school dress parade, and deliver whole school reward days twice per term for those who meet our good standing policy. We pride ourselves on creating an environment where learning is the cornerstone of everything we do, but we have a lot of fun along the way.
